Acrylic on canvas.

This quirky representation of the adorable, 'Billy Buttons' was painted in a whimsical mood, during my stay in Melbourne at the end of Summer 2022.

Using the unconventional tool of foraged natural sea sponge and a round stencilling brush, to create a sense of the real sunshine that comes when you see our delightful 'Billy Buttons' or 'Picnosorus chrysanthes'.

In nature they appear to me as nodding their upright pom pom heads in a cheerfully vibrant yellow, HELLO,HELLO.

I have loved these plants a long time, however had never seen them in nature, as they were not from my region. They were however from regions I had visited. True to my inquisitive nature I became curious to know more about this sweet Native plant as I painted 'Billy Buttons' and that same week 'Buttons of Sunshine'. i wanted to learn more of what environment I might find them.

On researching I became aware of the many varieties, this variety in South Australia and a grey variety 'Craspeda canens' in Victoria, are under threat or critically endangered of being lost forever. Due to Roadside slashing, land management practices and urbanisation reducing them and subsequently the biodiversity in many areas of South Australia and Victoria.

Thankfully with seed conservation projects, government re-establishing populations through targeted planting initiatives partnering with Botanic gardens these lovely plants are enjoying recovery, many home gardeners also introducing a variety also. I have ordered seeds for my garden and hope to do my bit also. I am thinking they may like it around my gully here. Certainly more Billy's to be painted and grown here on my little patch of paradise.
