Unframed Geisha is 2nd, of 2.
Painted in Nimbin, NSW. 2023 using lustrous Matisse professional grade acrylics, on a triple primed Deep Gallery Canvas. You can see Geisha #1 in my collection also. She is on the same sized canvas, painted in a background of illuminating yellow/green, with a parasol in mauve, and also grey on her Kimono. Geisha #1 and #2 make a lovely pair.
Inspiration for these paintings came from richly coloured Pop Art Geisha, printed on vintage wine coasters. A random find in my aunts belongings on her passing.
I have purposefully resisted framing these canvases, to allow the collectors preference. Framing will be a very personal choice, if framed at all.
My process for both Geisha paintings was to free hand sketch them onto the canvas, in chalk. Using a wet rag I enjoyed finding their personalities, both quite different. On brushing in these striking pair in a greyscale underpainting I gained a sense of their essence, individual character and form.
In these paintings, it was a rare time for me to use a pre mixed black paint achieving the flat look on her hair/wig I was after.
The grey scale painting was almost where I left Geisha #1 and Geisha #2 as both myself and a fellow artist found them quite mysterious, with the pure white and greys. In keeping with all that surrounds the Geisha, I may look at this as a concept for another day and another painting.
Since learning about the Geisha from my dad as a child, I have had an interest in the Japanese culture, calligraphy and art.
The Geisha wigs, hair styles and ornaments have a great deal of meaning connected to them and known by varying styles some I’ve read about are the ‘Geiko shimada’ and the wig worn whilst entertaining the ‘katsura’. So too the Kimono is steeped in symbolism. I have read if printed with a ‘crane’ motoif they are connected to longevity and good fortune. I hope these Geisha may bring me a little good fortune too. Really, they already have in the joy it brings painting them and they are 2 my collection favourites..

This painting is one of two Geishas. Geisha #1 is on the same sized canvas, you can view here in my gallery.
