Acrylic on deep gallery canvas, professionally box framed in Australian raw oak.
The perspective is looking toward the Gawler/Flinders Ranges of Port Augusta, South Australia, on Barngala peoples country. October 2022.
This painting has to be seen to be felt. As with the surroundings I sought to create a dynamic contrast in textures, A satin sky brush painted, in smooth contrast to the wonderfully rampant desert grasses, swept on with fan brush and palette knife.
The pink and orange sunset over the lilac and blue velvet ranges is synonymous with the Flinders ranges. The straw grass tufts seemingly move, even on a still day. At the time this area was thickly grassed and the red earth could only be seen peeping through in parts, making a statement of its own in the foreground.
This desert view is uninterrupted for 45--50kms of sweeping plains, from Iron Knob to the ranges.
The intensely beautiful colours of this painting are quite real life. Amazing scenery in South Australia. Some say due to the incredibly clean, dry air./turquoise rimming the ranges.
Watching the sunset I had a local with me, I asked him did he see this wonderful viridian/bluey. To my surprise he couldn't see it, not until I had him look away and back again. His excitement at seeing it was lovely. It made me think of times in life when you need to look at where you are at more closely, with fresh eyes, take your time and really take in what's around you. The soft unusual glow that colour gives is short and eloquently sweet at sunset, I was compelled to capture it in this painting.
Seeing the abundantly fruiting Quondong in the foreground, dangling like Christmas baubles reminded me of my childhood. Dad had a string of festive colourful lights hanging around a partitioned place in our garden.
Sunset is truly a an exquisite part of the Australian outback, even in the almost forgotten town of Iron Knob,
When I was planning this painting I made 'Quondong Sunset-study' a tiny post card size, from my photo reference. I was still in the area. It gave me the colour palette, before heading to the larger canvas which was a week or so later in Melbourne at my daughters.
A Hemiparasitic tree, Qoundong or Bush Peach, a super bush tucker food relies on a host plant for water and soil nutrition..
Whomever takes this painting home is going to own a joyful piece of my spirit from days in South Australia.
